I’m an adventure addict. I’m all about getting outside to get my exercise – it’s what my body likes best and I just can’t argue with that. Hanging out in nature has changed my life for the better in countless ways.

I recently heard about the 52 Hike Challenge, where you commit to hiking at least once a week, for 52 weeks. It sounded like a fun way to connect with the hiking community, post my fun adventure pics and challenge myself on a regular basis. What the heck – I signed up. There are so many local hikes I haven’t done, that I took my commitment one step further and signed up for the Explorer Series. That means I get to do one new hike every week, for 52 weeks. Woot!

Why do the 52 Hike Challenge?

Why not? Seriously. Beyond helping your body to become more fit, capable and healthier, hiking gives you a sense of accomplishment, peace and happiness. Not to mention overcoming the challenges associated with being in the outdoors, in the elements, facing your fears of the unknown. Talk about an opportunity for growth! Plus, you get to share all of your amazing photos with a cool community of folks out there doing the very same thing you are. When you’re immersed in nature’s beauty and awe on a regular basis, it’s easy to get hooked.

What is considered a hike?

The point of the Challenge is to just get outside and hike. Hikes include anything from a hike in your local park, urban hiking (yes, street hikes count) to moseying down trails and climbing mountains. You define what counts. This is the ‘honor system’, after all. They say that anything ‘1 mile plus’ is considered a hike. I’m gonna bet that if your body isn’t able to conquer a mile all at once that that would count, too. It’s your challenge, after all… But the point is to develop the fitness and self-confidence that will take you outdoors more often for longer, more challenging adventures under the sky.

When can I start?

Right now! What’s so cool about this Challenge is that there is no start or end date. It’s ongoing, so you can start at any time. Just make the commitment to get outside in the fresh air and hike once a week. You can do it!

How do I sign up?

Check out their site at 52 Hike Challenge and sign up for whatever series fits your lifestyle. Then join the Facebook group! I love it there. It’s fun to connect with other hikers from all over the world and see what they’re doing. It’s a very positive and supportive community, which is so rad.

How much does the 52 Hike Challenge cost?

This is the best part – it’s free! You don’t have to buy a single thing. Yes, they do have merchandise you can purchase, including fancy medals when you finish your challenge. But these folks put A LOT of time and effort into creating this community, resources, etc., so donating or purchasing at least a small sign-up package is probably a good idea. It’s only $19.99 and it helps to support their efforts, which I’m all about.
